Principal’s Briefing

Dear parents and friends of the community,

It gives me pleasure to bring you an update on where we are at here at Northpine Christian College.

School started well for Term 2 – almost like we never left the place.  This allowed both students and staff to hit the ground running and get straight on with the business at hand.

Week 1 saw the College finally get to hold our annual Cross-Country. This was a classic case of 3rd time’s a charm, and we are very grateful to the efforts of both Mr Richardson and Mr Gibbs alongside their amazing teams who made the events take place without a hitch.

There was a commendable effort from the students who fought hard right to the finish line. Thanks to our chaplaincy team, there was also a great carnival atmosphere. I wish to personally thank all students who participated for their amazing efforts and wish to acknowledge all those who made it through to the District Sports. Congratulations all on your wonderful efforts.

Week 2 saw the whole school come together for the NCC ANZAC service. This was held in the Sports Centre, and I wish to thank all students for the respect they showed as well as the wonderful efforts of the band that played both the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems. Well done everyone.

As we continue throughout the term, please make sure you keep a close watch over those in your care. The winter months can tend to drag out and we want to make sure that all our students are cared for in every way – physically, mentally, socially, and academically.

I pray that you, as family of NCC, remain close to the creator and that the love of Jesus spills over you as you as you journey throughout life.

Hot Cross Buns, Fun Runs and Supporting our Mums! P&F Update

The Parents and Friends Association have enjoyed enhancing the school community thus far and look forward to further involvement in the school community this year.

What you P&F have been up to:

Music Nights – To assist in enhancing the atmosphere of the college music nights, the P&F have been hosting a canteen. We offer a variety of snacks, drinks and food options to allow families to occupy their time and create opportunities to socialise while they wait for the performances to kick off. This is also a great fundraising opportunity for our College community. The next Music night is on Monday 3 June and we hope families will take advantage of our canteen and support our school community. If you would like to assist in running the canteen, please contact us at events.northpinepnf@gmail.com

Hot Cross Buns – Thank you to all who helped to wrap and distribute the Hot Cross Buns to the school community on our last day of Term 1. We hope that this small gesture helped you feel connected, appreciated, and reminded you of the true meaning of Easter. For us, the hot cross bun symbolises Easter through the cross representing the crucifixion of Jesus and the spices symbolising the spices that were put on the body of Jesus after he died.  We truly hope that you were blessed and look forward to continuing to support you throughout this new term!

Upcoming Events:

You’re Invited! Mother’s Day Morning Tea – To all our amazing, powerful mothers, grandmothers and mother figures, the Parents and Friends Association would like to invite you to our first Mother’s Day Morning Tea!

Touch Teams Soar – Northern Brisbane Interschool Sport League

In a Northpine Sports first, our College entered 2 touch football teams into a new sports competition called the Northern Brisbane Interschool Sport League.  This League runs a variety of sports gala days throughout the year, and this year, we decided to enter some teams into the Touch Football Gala Day.

Our Intermediate Boys (9-10) went undefeated, winning the overall champion award.  This group of boys thrived in this fast-paced environment!  They demonstrated leadership, team work and integrity…in fact, they were awarded the Fair Play award by the tournament organisers.  In the history of the competition and all sports played, no team has won both awards (overall winner and fair play) so this team has really ‘done Northpine proud’.

Our Junior girls (7-8) also played an amazing tournament and came 2nd overall!  They played well not only with each other, but with the other teams and showed incredible sportsmanship and dedication. We couldn’t be more proud with how they represented us.

A huge thank you to Abbey Edser and Dylan Southon for taking these teams out for this special event!

Primary Week of Worship was Out of This World

The echoes of inspiration still resound throughout our school following an awe-inspiring Week of Worship that took place in Term 1, led by the esteemed Pastor Leathan. Infused with the theme of “Limitless,” our spiritual journey transcended boundaries as we delved into the boundless wonders of faith.

Throughout the week, Pastor Leathan guided us through profound reflections on the Limitless nature of God and the extraordinary possibilities that unfold when we align our lives with His purpose. From heartfelt stories to engaging discussions, each day ignited a flame of hope within us, reminding us that with God, all things are possible.

The central message of the week resonated deeply with students and staff alike: God’s power knows no bounds, and through Him, we can achieve greatness beyond our wildest dreams. As we explored the concept of Limitless, we discovered that our faith serves as a catalyst for transcending limitations and embracing a life of abundance and purpose.

One of the most impactful aspects of the Week of Worship was the opportunity for students to make personal commitments. Encouraged by Pastor Leathan’s stirring words, many students took the chance to commit to the Limitless possibilities that God has in store for them through prayer and Bible studies.

Looking ahead, we are looking forward to and are excited for the Limitless things of God as we embark on a series of Bible studies for those students that wanted to take part. These sessions will provide a platform for further exploration of faith, deepening our understanding of God’s Limitless love and empowering us to live boldly in His grace.

As we reflect on the transformative experience of our Primary Week of Worship with Pastor Leathan, one thing is abundantly clear: our journey towards embracing the Limitless potential of our faith has only just begun. With hearts full of gratitude and anticipation, we eagerly anticipate the remarkable journey ahead, confident that with God, the possibilities are truly Limitless.

A “Dam” Good Time – Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Training Camp

On the 15th -17th of March, a group of 19 students participated in the Bronze Training Camp for 2024 where they explored and navigated the beautiful Bellthorpe National Park, near Woodford. This weekend tested the participants’ fitness, ability to carry their gear in their pack and perseverance. Most managed to keep their feet dry over the several creek crossings we had to traverse until we arrived at a serene waterhole with a small waterfall. Many swam to cool off after the uphill hike, while others enjoyed their lunch and a relax before heading off on the trail again. After walking for a little while longer, navigating using only a map and a compass, all groups made it to our campsite – Running Creek Parklands.

Running Creek Parklands is a beautiful camping spot with large open areas with shaded trees by Running Creek and views of the majestic Mount Beerwah. The participants enjoyed swimming in the creek and making dams before setting up their tents and cooking their camping food essentials (noodles.) All students also had a go at making damper over the fire with sticks later in the evening!

The next day, students traversed a circuit up and down some extremely steep tracks and back into the camp. All students made it and worked together to carry their daypacks and navigate through some challenging terrain. This challenged each group and tested their determination and ability to push through, despite the discomfort. Our team was relieved to see their campsite again and enjoy another afternoon spent in the creek – and making an effort to catch up on their logbooks.

The next morning all groups worked on a navigation and map reading exercise. To finish the morning students enjoyed the waterholes in the creek and added stones to a rock wall which acted as a dam.

Over the weekend students learnt to orientate and read a map, use the CB radio, navigate a planned route, carry a pack, use a cooker to prepare their own food and to pitch and pack up a tent. Congratulations to all our participants for completing their first training camp! We look forward to the next Practice Expedition when participants get to practice the skills they have learnt in the fine art of bushwalking.

Thank you to our volunteers, Mr Hobson, Mr Wilson, Miss Bradford, Mr Chester, Luisa Coleman and Clayton Forbes.

Green Means Go! Cross Country 2024

After weeks and multiple attempts at rescheduling, our Primary and Secondary school finally got to take the field in our annual cross-country!  Despite the grounds still being a little damp from the recent downpours, our students pushed forward, taking on each bump in the road head-on (literally!) From bush trails to grassy fields, our students pushed through and won amazing results for each of their houses.

Primary Gallery

Although each House pushed hard for the win, our Fraser House came out triumphant with Primary receiving 528 points and Secondary winning 500.  Great effort Green!  As for second place, our Stradbroke House took home the silver with Primary earning a solid 422 points and Secondary collecting a close 489.  Coming in lucky last (but certainly not least), our sunshine House, Moreton, only missed out on second place by a margin with Primary achieving 313 points and Secondary scoring 482.

Secondary Gallery

Despite the delays, our cohort was delighted to finally take place in this awesome event.  A massive thank you to our Sports Coordinators for putting together these events, and to all of our dedicated teacher volunteers.  These days would not exist without your hard work!

Meet Our New Strings Teacher: Mrs Martin

Please welcome our new strings teacher to the music family here at Northpine. Mrs Martin has played violin for the vast majority of her life, earning a Bachelor of Music Performance in Violin from the University of Alberta, Canada. She has spent fifteen years teaching and developing the strings music culture in Townsville before making the decision to move to the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

Mrs Martin has spent much of her time performing in local orchestras, quartets, trios, and exploring a wide range of music. We cannot wait to see what she brings to the role and to the students here at Northpine. If you see her around, please do not hesitate to say hi!

If you are interested in violin or viola lessons with Mrs Martin, please feel free to submit an expression of interest on the Northpine Music website. https://www.northpine.qld.edu.au/school-life/music/music-enrolment/

“Mic Drop” on Another Amazing Concert – Vocal Sounds 2024

Last term on the 25th of March, our vivacious vocalists took to the stage with a veritable energy. Our singers featured from years 2 all the way through to year 12 displaying their wealth of talent made for an exciting evening for all.

Whether it was soloists nailing renditions of Billy Joel, or youngins’ nailing tunes from Sister Act, or even a collective of very energetic boys (and two very energetic staff members) fulfilling their dreams of performing Disney musicals, the evening had something for everyone.

Massive thanks go out to all of the choir directors, helpers, families, and the P&F for their assistance on the night.

Honouring Sacrifice and Remembrance – ANZAC Day Ceremony

Amidst the solemn silence that engulfed Northpine Christian College, the spirit of remembrance and reverence for the fallen heroes echoed through the hearts of students and staff alike during the school’s ANZAC Day service and march. The campus stood as a testament to the gratitude and respect held for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

This year’s ANZAC school service was marked by reflections and stirring tales of bravery, courtesy of Mr Nathan Probst from Emu Gully Adventure Education Group. As Mr. Probst shared stories of sacrifice, bravery, commitment, and mateship, students were captivated and inspired by the unwavering spirit of our ANZAC heroes. Mr Probst concluded his speech with a reminder for all those present, of the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made on the cross and His willingness to lay down His life for His friends.

The service wasn’t merely a commemoration; it was a call to action, urging all present to embody the values of courage and selflessness exemplified by those who have served. Mr Probst’s words resonated deeply with the audience, leaving an indelible impression on the minds of students, staff and parents alike.

Following the ANZAC service held at school on Wednesday morning, students from the Early Learning Centre, Primary School, and High School united on Thursday morning in the annual ANZAC Day march. The procession served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals throughout history to secure the freedoms we cherish today.

Following on from the march, Mr Thomson and our esteemed school captains, Findlay Meighan and Matilda Ready, along with other high school students continued on to the official laying of wreath ceremony where Mr Thomson, Findlay & Matilda paid homage to the courage and resilience of our ANZAC heroes, ensuring that their legacy lives on in our collective memory. Their participation underscored the school’s commitment to preserving the memory of those who have served and sacrificed for our nation.

In commemorating ANZAC Day, Northpine Christian College reaffirmed its dedication to instilling the values of courage, sacrifice, and mateship in the hearts of its students. The days served as a poignant reminder of the debt of gratitude owed to those who have bravely defended our freedoms, inspiring all to honour their legacy through acts of service and remembrance.

What’s On in the Library?

New Library Days

This term, Miss Bull will be bringing each Prep to Yr 6 class to the library. Most classes will be coming either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday morning. Please check with your child’s teacher and homeroom notes regarding which day your class will be coming to the library so that they can return/ borrow on the correct day.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is an annual state-wide initiative for Queensland state, non-state schools, and home-educated students from Prep to Year 9. This Challenge aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning.

At our College, only Prep – Year 6 participates. For students to successfully complete the challenge they must read or experience an allocated number of books based upon their year level during the reading period.

There are a few changes this year to the challenge:

  1. The reading period will be shorter – only 6 weeks! (Tuesday 7th May till Friday 21st June – end of Term 2)
  2. Students no longer need consent forms to participate
  3. Students will only complete one page (P-4 20 books; Yr 5-6 15 books)
  4. There will be no award/medal for the most read books, as we no longer record names, but all students who participate will receive a Certificate of Achievement in October.

How do I encourage my child to read?

Parents, guardians, teachers, aides, siblings, student buddies and classmates play an important role in encouraging students to develop a love of reading. Here are some ideas to help:

  • make time to read aloud to your child every day, even for a few minutes
  • show the importance of reading in your daily life and let your child see you read—not only books but recipes, newspapers and text messages for example
  • browse a bookstore together
  • ensure reading time is fun and exciting
  • visit the local library and let your child choose some books to borrow
  • for younger children, let them hold the book and turn the pages.

Please remember to check your emails and class home pages for more information.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) Wednesday 22nd May

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, family day cares, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

Now in its 24th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.

This year the book that will be read is called “Bowerbird Blues” by Aura Parker. Make sure you stop by the library in the coming weeks to see our Bowerbird display.

Surviving & Thriving – Year 9 ODE Camp

This term, students from the Year 9 Outdoor Education elective subject spent the term learning how to plan for and be self-sufficient on an overnight camp. Some of the skills they leant were: how to cook on a Trangia stove and how to set up a tent.

During Week 7, they put their new skills into practice by going on a 2-day canoeing camp to Harry’s Hut. With no power, clean water, flushing toilets or showers, students were put out of their comfort zone and learnt through experience.

Well done to these amazing students!

High School Leadership Camp Empowers Students to Thrive

We recently held our Leadership Development Camp tailored for student leaders & chaplains in Grades 7 through 12. It was an extraordinary opportunity for young minds to cultivate their leadership skills, foster teamwork, and embark on a journey of personal development.

Led in conjunction with our heads of Middle & Senior School (Ms Renee Jones & Mr Joshua Cooney), the chaplaincy department (Mr Thomson, Pastor Sharyn, and Pastor Shaun) provided a platform for students to unleash their potential and hone in their leadership skills. Through a series of engaging workshops, participants were challenged to step out of their comfort zones, tackle obstacles head-on, and emerge as stronger, more confident leaders.

The atmosphere buzzed with enthusiasm as students delved into activities designed to promote collaboration, communication, and problem-solving. Whether navigating through team-building exercises or engaging in thought-provoking discussions, every moment was an opportunity for growth and self-discovery.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr Thomson, Ms Jones, Mrs Rabbis, and Pastor Shaun, whose unwavering commitment, dedication, and sacrifice made this enriching experience possible. Their investment of time and expertise undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the young leaders they mentored.

As the curtains draw on this year’s Leadership Camp, we eagerly anticipate witnessing the fruits of this transformative experience. With newfound skills, resilience, and camaraderie, our student leaders are poised to make a lasting impact within our school and beyond.

Looking ahead, the anticipation for next year’s Leadership Camp is palpable. With each iteration, we anticipate even greater achievements and milestones as our student leaders continue to flourish in this nurturing environment.

In closing, the Leadership Camp has not only empowered our students but also served as a testament to the boundless potential within each and every one of them. As they carry forth the lessons learned and the connections forged, we remain steadfast in our belief that the future is indeed bright with these remarkable young leaders at the helm.
